A monkey in Reauakalan village in Satna district, India, apparently babysat an infant for five hours until it was ensnared.
The baby was being massaged by her grandmother on the courtyard of the house when the monkey came.
When it started playing with the girl, the display of affection from the ape scared the baby's grandmother.
However, she stayed calm to keep the baby out of the harm's way.
"The monkey sat next to the baby, gazed and played with her for a few minutes before it snatched her from her grandmother's lap and took her to the roof," Vrindavan Soni, the child's father said.
"My mother rushed inside and informed us about the matter. We called the local police for help," he added.
Many local villagers, armed with canes and iron rods, gathered at Soni's house and were apparently surprised by the monkey's love and unusual gestures towards the child.
"All of them were surprised by the monkey's human-like act," police said.
The wildlife rescue team of the Rewa forest division were called to capture the monkey.
It released the baby unhurt after the team alarmed it.
The monkey was caught and then released in the forest.
"The wild animal presented a unique example of bond of love with a human being," forest officials said.
