When Shebeen (bar) owner Ernest heard a noise in his back garden and he ran to see if somebody was trying to steal his chicken, but he found a drunk man raping his chicken!
"I tried to catch him but he ran away," said Ernest Mashaba (37) of Thandizwe Village in Manguzi, northern KZN, South Africa.
Ernest, who owns a shebeen in the village, said the man is one of his regular customers.
He closed the shebeen at about midnight on Thursday night.
"But this one man was so drunk that I left him outside the shop to sleep, hoping the cold would wake him up."
Ernest went to bed, but hours later he was woken up by strange noises outside his house.
"I rushed to the outside kitchen where I kept my chicken and found that the door was open. I caught the man busy poking my chicken in the bushes. I tried to grab him but he ran away," said Ernest.
His wife Busisiwe Thabethe (36) said they went to the man's shack first thing in the morning. "We brought him back to our house and called all the neighbours. He apologised, saying it was probably the booze that made him do it.
"He offered to give us R300 to buy chickens. Our chicken was looking sick and it couldn't walk. There was white liquid coming from its backside and mouth."
Said induna John Masinga: "We sent him home so we could call the cops, but he ran away."
Busisiwe said they made him hold the chicken so they could take a picture of him as evidence.
"After we'd forced him to cook and eat the chicken, we took him to the induna (chief) and he promised to buy eight chickens to replace our chicken and seven eggs abandoned when he grabbed her," said Busisiwe.
