A South African children's rights organisation
, Khula Community Development Project, has called on the country's department of education to probe a school after a pupil's face was badly burnt by acid.
Siyabulela Hola, 19, was scarred when a five-litre bottle of acid fell on the floor and exploded .
A fellow pupil, Sinethemba Monde, 14, has acid burns on his leg.
The
Dispatch online reports that the two were part of a group of pupils who had been told by a teacher at Zanolwazi Combined School at Upper Gwalana location in Peddie to clean out the school's strong-room.
One of the pupils passed an unmarked bottle to another, but it slipped, pouring acid over Hola's face. He screamed in agony and, with Monde, was rushed to hospital.
The teenager's face is so badly scarred he cannot blink or close his eyes due to skin tissue damage to his face.
It is alleged that although the incident happened almost four months ago, the school failed to report the matter to the district education offices or provincial department.
Children's rights organisation Khula Community Development Project and parents are accusing the school of failing to follow proper procedures in dealing with the incident.
