A policeman is battling for life after being struck several times with a machete and an axe while trying to arrest suspected illegal gold panners.
Sergeant Shorai Murimakamwe, who is based in Kadoma, Zimbabwe was following up on a report that Evans Hove and his brother Lawrence were threatening people with machetes at Gomba nightclub.
Sgt Murimakamwe was struck several times on the legs with an iron bar, axe and a machete and he sustained serious injuries including broken legs and hand.
He was taken to Kadoma General Hospital from where he was transferred to Harare.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, adding that police had arrested Lawrence.
Evans was still on the run.
He attended the scene with four colleagues. The team followed the brothers, who disappeared but suddenly emerged from the tall grass and pounced on the policemen.
