Prostitutes wearing masks to protect their identity marched through the Johannesburg CBD to have prostitution legalised.
They also bitterly complained about how cops demand free sex and steal their money.
A sex worker of 11 years told Daily Sun: “Once you are arrested, you’re not allowed to have a visitor who can bring your diabetes or ARV medication to the cells.
“Cops even confiscate our condoms and force us to sleep with them in exchange for our release.
“We are tired of them treating us like animals.”
A memorandum of grievances including police brutality, robbery, sexual harassment and being denied access to medication while in custody was handed to Colonel Chester Spiers at the Johannesburg Central Police Station.
Spiers said: “I have heard all your points and I will make sure they reach the relevant people.”
The sex workers said they want a response before the end of this month and are hoping for a positive response from the SAPS.
Similar marches are planned for Cape Town, Durban and East London today.
