Gary Mead, a top US Homeland Security official in charge of deportations is stepping down.
This comes after Immigration and Customs Enforcement released hundreds of immigrants from jails and detention centers before government spending cuts.
Agency officials insisted his depaerture was not linked to the mass release of immigrants who the feds say are not a priority for deportation.
Back in 2012 the U.S. was locking up more illegal immigrants than ever, generating lucrative profits for the nation’s largest private prison companies.
At the time the cost to American taxpayers was expected to top $2 billion.
The companies also have raked in cash from subsidiaries that provide health care and transportation.
