Ben Zweli (50) has been hit twice by lightning and lived to tell the tale.
The first time Ben was hit was while he was driving a tractor on a farm seven years ago.
He was knocked off his tractor and the left side of his body was affected.
His wife Sophy Khiba (51), warned him then that he had to be cleansed with muthi to avoid a second strike.
“But I didn’t listen to her,” Ben told the Daily Sun. “If I had, I would not have been burned twice.”
Last Saturday, when he was standing at the window of his house in Bothaville, Free State, lightning hit him again! This time his face was badly scorched.
In some African cultures, there is a belief that if you survive a lightning strike, it will come and strike you again unless you drink special muthi.“My wife kept telling after the first time, but I didn’t believe her,” said Ben.
According to Ben, the flash that hit him last Saturday came in the middle of a storm.“I heard a loud bang, and I saw a huge green fire in front of me. I knew what was happening and tried to run away, but it was too late.“My face was burnt and my kids were screaming in the bedroom.
Luckily I was OK after hospital treatment. Now I’m not hesitating. I plan to go to a sangoma and drink the proper muthi,” said Ben. “Then I believe lightning will never hit me again.”
He said his brother was also struck by lightning and lived to tell the tale.“I thank God for saving my life, even though the lighting has destroyed my looks,” he added.
Sophy said: “I am happy that my husband has survived. I will help him get to a sangoma to be cleansed with muthi.“I warned him the first time but he would not listen, but I will make sure that it does not happened again.”
A sangoma has said “Somebody might be trying to kill them. Lightning is also used to make a person suffer. Maybe somebody is jealous of the man and he is using the lightning. But this victim’s blood is strong to survive two attacks. He will need an arm belt to protected him from lightning in the future, though.”
