Chaos reigned supreme in Dzivarasekwa Extension on Thursday afternoon as rumours of a suspected goblin (chikwambo) stopped at an apostolic sect member's residence circulated.
The owner of the house, only identified as Majoni of House No. 559, under Nehanda Cooperative, is said to be a prophet from Johane Masowe weNguwo Tsvuku apostolic church.
People jostled to catch a glimpse of the alleged goblin, which reportedly spoke, leaving people scurrying for cover. Some claimed that the goblin knocked on Majoni's door.
When HMetro news crew visited the scene, the area was awash with the whole neighbourhood with the news and people still gathered around the house anticipating to hear the alleged creature speaking. Various theories circulated of the goblin having been discovered by the children at the house.
"Chabuda chikati ndipeiwo chikafu ndidye," said one child.
Others claimed: "Chati vanhu ibva pano ndibude"
Children at the house were taken to 'safe' house at neighbours houses as the growing crowd at their house was reportedly intimidating them, demanding answers. Reports are that instant justice was nearly meted on a woman who left the house with a sack of mealies, with people accusing her of taking the goblin into hiding.
She was reportedly taken to Dzivarasekwa police station where the incident ended. The officer in charge at the police station was however, not present when our news crew visited the station.
"She was leaving the house with a sack and people mobbed her, accusing her of habouring the goblin. She had to be taken to the police for her safety. Abvarurirwa saga achinzi avakuenda nechikwambo"
Residents expressed mixed reactions over the incident.
"If these claims are true, then it's actually bad and it tarnishes names of us as mapostori. Panogara muporofita and if he uses juju then it's bad," said a woman of apostolic beliefs.
"Vanhu havadzidze, vamwe vakaputikirwa kuZengeza nazvo izvi," said another woman.
Another Dzivarasekwa resident said: "These are unfounded claims, and I do not think there is such a thing (called a goblin). People are gathered and no one has seen the goblin and these are just reports being circulated by a woman of mental illness," he said.
Other residents could not speak for fear of being victimized by the co-operative's authorities, which were hostile when they were confronted by the news crew at a police post in the area.
