THE strife and chaos at Beitbridge Border Post yesterday ended like a Hollywood film with the Zimbabwe army deployed to restore order at the border.
Following a day of running battles between police and angry civilians protesting against the controversial ban on imports (Statutory Instrument 64 of 2016), security details manning the border finally conceded defeated as rioters continued to cause havoc.
By yesterday they had already burnt the ZIMRA warehouse and further threatening to cause more havoc until the ban is reversed.
This prompted Mugabe's government to respond by deploying army helicopters and canons to the border to restore order. At the same time, industry minister Mike Bimha also hurriedly announced on State-run radio Star FM that the banned had been revoked immediately.
But Zimra on the other hand issued a statement contrary to the minister's proclamation saying travellers must "comply with the policy and follow proper channels if they are not happy..."
Sources at the troubled border post today told Zim Metro that the situation was calm with heavily armed security details still guarding the place.
The source added that some civilians were assisting security details to clean up the place.
