The Zimbabwe Republic Police have threatened to deal violently with civilians who are engaging or planning to engage in public protests through demonstrations.
“It is in this regard that police officers have been heavily deployed to deal with any public disorder situation," senior assistant commissioner Charity Charamba wrote in a statement today.
As police we have information and intelligence on the identities of some criminal elements who are behind the social unrest,” the statement further reads.
The statement goes further: “The security roadblocks on our roads are there to monitor the situation. Be warned not to engage in violent activities. So far we have arrested some unruly elements this morning in Ruwa and Mabvuku who were blocking roads.”
The police statement comes true as seen by today’s crackdown which saw protesters in Harare earlier today being severely beaten by riot police for staging a protest against roadblocks.
The threat is not new as security details have in the past been used by the State to use brutal force to
curtail freedom of assembly despite the fact that the Zimbabwe Constitution guarantees the freedom to demonstrate and or petition.
In the past few days some civilians have been engaging in violent protests. Last week protesters staged a violent demonstration in Beitbridge and destroyed public and private property. The situation was later calmed by the Zimbabwe army.
