Warriors go into camp

THE WARRIORS start camp today ahead of their international friendly match against Mozambique on Sunday at Barbourfields Stadium, as coach Ian Gorowa starts preparations for the 2014 African Nations Championships (Chan) finals.
After this match, the Warriors will engage Libya at the same venue before they go into camp for next year’s finals in South Africa.
Another friendly match is planned against Guinea in early January.
Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela said the Mozambicans would be flying direct to Bulawayo.
“We are expecting the Mozambique national team on Thursday in Bulawayo. The Warriors go into camp tomorrow (today), and the coach (Ian Gorowa) is already in the country to start preparations for the game,” he said.
“The coach is meeting his technical team tonight (last night) and the list of players will be available tomorrow.
This is the first step in Gorowa’s preparations in coming up with a team that will finally reach the knockout stages of the Chan finals, having failed in their last two appearances in Ivory Coast and Sudan.
They are in Group B together with Burkina Faso, Morocco and Uganda.
The Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season ended on Saturday and with Gorowa having been travelling far and apart, watching numerous games since taking over from Klaus-Dieter Pagels after the Cosafa finals, he is expected to come up with a strong team.
But already he has lost top goalscorer Tendai Ndoro to South African Absa Premier Soccer League side Mpumalanga Black Aces, while Devon Chafa was banned for six months by Fifa after failing a doping test. The Chan tournament is for players plying their trade in domestic leagues only.
From the local contingent, Gorowa can call on the services of goalkeepers George Chigova and Munyaradzi Diya, Felix Chindungwe, Kuda Mahachi, Tawanda Muparati, Hardlife Zvirekwi, Charles Sibanda, Eric Chipeta, Blessing Chimwamuchere, Peter Moyo, Ronald Chitiyo and Warren Dube, among others.
