The Asiagate footballing crisis involving Zimbabwean football took a new
twist Wednesday after a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation
(CIO) who kidnapped ZIFA CEO Jonathan Mashingaidze was freed by the
courts.
Richard Mubaiwa, a state operative who had been charged with kidnapping
and extorting $10 000 was freed after the state failed to come up with a
trial date.
In 21 February, Mashingaidze was taken hostage just outside Harare and
told he was on a hit-list of people involved in investigating the
alleged match-fixing, which involved matched between 2007 and 2009.
Mubaiwa was arrested during a sting operation.
