The government of Zimbabwe says it has raised over US$1 million towards capacitating young software innovators, State broadcaster ZBC has reported.
According to the station, ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Supa Mandiwanzira revealed the development at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebrations held at Muzarabani Growth Point.
"Government working together with local telecommunication companies has come up with an innovation fund to capacitate young software innovators. So it's a challenge to you inventers to come up to with new technology innovations,’’ Mandiwanzira is quoted as saying.
He also challenged youths to come up with technologically innovative ideas.
POTRAZ board vice chairman Retired Major General Sibangumuzi Khumalo commended President Robert Mugabe for his vision to enhance ICT development in the country.
The Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Advocate Martin Dinha appealed for government assistance in improving telecommunication services in the province, especially in border areas.
"More needs to be done to ensure that every Zimbabwean, regardless of geographical location or net worth in life, has access to telecommunication services," said Advocate Dinha.
The 2016 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebrations were held under the theme: 'ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact'.
