HARARE residents should brace for another dry weekend as Harare City Council will on Saturday shut down its main water treatment plant, Morton Jaffray Water Works, to facilitate the replacement of obsolete equipment.
It is the second shutdown this month. The city has urged residents to store adequate supplies before the shutdown and use the water sparingly.
“The City of Harare wishes to advise residents of a scheduled complete shutdown of Morton Jaffray Water Works from 6am on 21 to 22 May 2016.
“The city is taking advantage of the winter season when water usage is at its lowest to complete the retrofitting of the new equipment,” said the city’s acting corporate communications manager, Mr Michael Chideme.
Last week, the city said there would be less complete shutdowns of Morton Jaffray Water treatment plant after completing the installation of critical equipment.
Engineer Christopher Zvobgo last week said after carrying out major maintenance work, it normally takes two hours for residents who live along the trunk mains to start receiving water.
Harare City Council is implementing the Harare Water and Sanitation Rehabilitation Project under a $144 million Chinese facility.
Work on the project began in April 2013 and the contractor, China Machinery and Engineering Corporation, has completed various works.
Upon completion of the project, water supply is expected to rise to 670 megalitres from 400 megalitres.
