FIVE people died on the spot, while eight others were seriously injured in a head on collision involving a commuter omnibus and a Volkswagen Passat along the Harare-Mutare highway yesterday morning.
The accident occurred a few kilometres from the Marondera tollgate.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident, saying the Harare-bound commuter omnibus burst its tyre and encroached into the lane of the Passat.
Five people, all female, reportedly died while eight others were injured including the driver of the Passat identified as Tanyanyisa Marange.
The injured passengers were taken to Parirenyatwa and Marondera hospitals.
By the time the fire brigade arrived at the scene, most of the passengers in the commuter omnibus had already been rescued with the exception of a female passenger who was still trapped in the wreckage of the Passat.
