RUSAPE General Hospital has been rocked by another financial scam following the theft of $6 367 from the hospital safe. Provincial Medical Director Dr Simon Nyadundu confirmed the theft on Wednesday. The incident occurred on December 31, 2013.
Dr Nyadundu said the theft, which has raised a stink within the workforce at the hospital as some allege it was an inside job, has been handed over to police for investigations.
Dr Nyadundu could neither confirm nor deny claims by some workers that the money, which was part of medical fees paid in by patients, had not been banked for several days as per Government policy which directs that banking be done daily.
"It is true that funds amounting to $6 367 were stolen at Rusape General Hospital. We have not carried out any investigations to establish when the money was last banked because the matter is now in the hands of the police," said Dr Nyadundu.
Health Provincial Administrator Mr Joe Charangwa refused to take questions, saying he was on leave.
"I am sorry I cannot comment over that matter because I am on leave. I have been away since before Christmas, and I am home, as we speak," said Mr Charangwa.
Rusape police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said investigations were in progress.
Asst Insp Kakohwa said an accounts clerk, Juma Chisaru, secured cash amounting to $6 367 in the safe and locked the accounts office doors.
"The following day, around 5.20am, Lloyd Muzerekeni, of Zimcam Security, was carrying out routine patrols at the hospital when he observed that the accounts office door was partially open.
"He advised the hospital administrator, Munashe Ngwaru, who reported the matter to the police," said Asst Insp Kakohwa.
Investigations so far have revealed that the door was forced open using an unknown object.
"While inside, the thief inserted another object in the keyhole of the Chubb safe, forcing it to open. The locking device was damaged and all the cash was stolen," said Asst Insp Kakohwa.
Some workers queried how some explosives could be used to blow off the Chubb safe open without damaging other gadgets in the office.
"The whole thing is suspicious. There were two Chubb safes, and how did they know which safe had money without inside information?
"There is a strong belief that this particular safe was not locked at all. The other thing is that the thieves took wards of genuine money, leaving behind all counterfeit notes," said the source.
"The money had gone for some days without being banked and nobody knows why. Government institutions are supposed to bank all daily collections, and the previous day was a bankable day, but nobody bothered to. And to wake up and tell us that $6 000 has gone missing raises serious issues of whether it was merely a coincidence or the whole thing was premeditated, planned and executed," said an insider at the hospital.
Another hospital source revealed that the powers that be at the institution, who were supposed to have ensured that the money was banked, have summoned all workers who were on duty the previous night for a body of inquiry.
"There is drama at the hospital. The workers are being asked to explain what has become of the money since they were the ones on duty.
"These people are being unreasonable," said the sources.
