AN O-Level pupil at Shangani Secondary School is set to part with $200 or 60 days in prison after being found guilty of driving without a licence and killing a passenger in an accident.
Michael Tawanda Hove (20) of Stand Number 14 Blackwaters in Shangani pleaded guilty to driving without a valid driver's licence and culpable homicide when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe.
Hove was further sentenced to six months imprisonment, which was wholly suspended on condition that he performs 210hours community service at Shangani Primary School starting on Monday next week. He was ordered to complete the community service within a period of six weeks.
The court heard that on 5 October this year at about 2.50pm, Hove was driving a Nissan Cabster truck along a strip road northwards from Shangani Mine turn off towards Shangani Mine, with four passengers on board.
On reaching the 8km peg along the same road, Hove lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road to the left and to the right and subsequently overturned and landed on its roof facing the southern direction.
A passenger who was at the back of the truck was trapped to death while the other sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged at Shangani Hospital.
Ms Getrude Zvidzai represented the State.
