A Gwanda man is behind bars for allegedly beating his grandmother to death using an iron bar.
Bekithemba Ndlovu (21) of Mbuka village in Guyu reportedly beat his grandmother Kabelo Mdlongwa (60) with an iron bar over undisclosed misunderstanding.
It is reported that on 7 November, the accused and the now deceased were left together at the homestead and family members do not know what transpired during their absence that caused a misunderstanding between the two.
At around 1pm, Mdlongwa's son Tumelo aged 27 returned home and upon arrival, he got the shock of his life as he found Ndlovu beating his mother.
The helpless woman was reportedly lying on the ground while the callous Ndlovu hammered her using an iron bar.
When Tumelo tried to save his mother, Ndlovu who at the time appeared as if he was demon possessed turned on him and realizing that his life was in danger, he ran away.
Ndlovu continued bashing his grandmother.
Tumelo rushed to alert a neighbourhood watch committee member and by the time they arrived at the homestead, they found Mdlongwa dead and lying in a pool of blood. Ndlovu pretending as if he had done nothing wrong was reportedly relaxing under a tree and he was arrested.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident saying, "Police are still investigating the matter and Ndlovu was arrested on murder charges."
The now deceased body was taken to Mpilo hospital where it is awaiting post-mortem.
