The Miss Trans Brazil 2013 contest ran into controversy as the organisers offered the winner a sex change operation.
The law in Brazil prohibits sex change, so the procedure was proposed to be carried out at a hospital in Thailand.
Representatives from the hospital were in attendance at the pageant.
However, the organisers clarified that they had not offered a sex change operation, but a voucher that they could use at the hospital to avail of any services including sex change and cosmetic surgery.
28 contestants participated in the Miss Trans contest, held for the second time in Rio.
The winner, a 21 year old hair-dresser from Sau Paulo, Raiica Ferraz, will contest in the Miss Universe Transgender 2014 pageant.
She has chosen not to get a sex change, but a cosmetic surgery.
The contest aims to fight against the marginalisation of crimes against members of the LGBT community.
Between 2007 and 2012, 1,341 murders of LGBT members have been reported.
Majorie Marchi, organizer of the contest and an activist said that there is a need for affirmative and inclusive public policies for transsexuals, and until that is achieved, they would make themselves "very visible and hard to ignore."
