A woman allegedly left her three children with her boyfriend to go and visit another lover, and one of them was allegedly raped by the man.
The mum, who cannot be named to protect the children's identities, left her two daughters, aged eight and 11, and her five-year-old son in Molapo, Soweto, while she went to Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.
The boyfriend had allegedly been raping the eight-year-old for a while.
A neighbour said the child arrived at her house and said the man was raping her and she was tired of being his "wife".
"I was shocked and alerted the community. The man was arrested last Tuesday," she said.
The child allegedly told community members that she told her mum about the rape but the woman threatened to kill her daughter if she told anyone, and beat her up for telling lies.
The child was allegedly stopped from going to school so the man could rape her.
The accused appeared in the Protea Magistrates Court for a second time yesterday and Molapo residents arrived in numbers to protest outside.
They demanded that the accused should not be granted bail.
One resident shouted: "Down with rapists, down!"
The child's mother went to court with a friend to give her boyfriend support.
The case was postponed to Thursday and the children have been taken to a place of safety.
