Residents protested outside court, demanding that the woman who allegedly beat up a schoolgirl should not get bail.
Amahle Mdlalose (22) of Nquthu, KZN, made her first appearance in the Nquthu Magistrates Court on Thursday. She is facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Mdlalose apparently accused schoolgirl
Nompilo Vilakazi (18) of dating her boyfriend.
She allegedly invited her to her house, where she locked the door and hit her more than 100 times with a sjambok.
She asked her friend to record the attack, which lasted about 13 minutes.
The court postponed the matter to give Mdlalose time to apply for legal aid and she was released on warning.
She will be back in court next Friday.
The residents were not happy about the court's decision to release her on warning.
They said they wanted Mdlalose to rot in jail.
They held placards which read: "Let her rot in jail and throw away the keys" and "We want justice to prevail".
One of the residents, Mahlompho Motloung (47), said they left their home chores to support the Vilakazi family.
"She'll continue assaulting our kids," Mahlompho said.
A family member, Celi Mntambo, said they were going to open a civil case against the Mondlo Police Station for forcing Nompilo to forgive the suspect.
"I have evidence that they misused the law. We want to see justice," Celi said.
Resident Sechaba Motloung (26) said: "We want this matter cleared before the end of this year.
"The suspect did not act alone. We want her accomplice to be prosecuted as well."
