Rogers Mkhabela claims that when he was 62 years old the ancestors gave him a very important message.
They told him where a huge pot of gold was buried. "The British buried it there during their war with the Boers," the ancestors said.
Rogers Mkhabela, from Saselani near Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, apparently couldn't believe his luck.
He took his pick and shovel, headed to the spot and began to dig.
Rogers is now 72 - and he is still digging. He hasn't found any sign of the treasure, but he is not ready to give up yet.
"Jealous people are casting spells on the hole and this has angered my ancestors. That is why I have not found anything yet," said Rogers.
He said his ancestors told him to work alone.
"The treasure is my blessing. They said the gold was stolen from them and only my family must benefit from it. The ground is holy - no one may walk here unless the ancestors allow them to," he said.
With the rainy season starting, Rogers will experience the same problem he has every year.
The hole is 10 metres deep and will be flooded. He uses buckets to scoop out the water and that delays his pursuit of the treasure.
The cops have come to the site and told Rogers to stop digging.
"The police were supposed to warn me before they came here. Now I have to perform a ritual to calm the ancestors," he said.
Lieutenant Ndlovukazi Mashale who visited the site said: "We are concerned about the man's health. At his age he is supposed to be resting or doing light work. We are looking at ways of getting him to stop."
Mashale said it was obvious that no treasure would be found there.
