A security guard, Adesina Atanda, employed to guard Gbaremu neighbourhood in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria mistakenly shot his colleague while on duty in the early hours of Friday.
The incident, which reportedly occurred about 3.30 a.m., was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State Police command, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, who said that the suspect had been arrested.
Saturday Tribune gathered that the suspect and the deceased, Taofeek (25), had resumed duty on Friday and had interacted with each other without any quarrel between them.
Atanda was said to have slept off at a particular time, putting his gun on his chest.
He reportedly woke up suddenly to see a figure approaching him in the dark, and had allegedly picked his gun and shot the approaching figure in the stomach, thinking that it was an armed robber.
His colleague, who reportedly did not flash any light to announce his approach, was said to have died instantly.
The remains of the deceased have been taken to a mortuary at the State Hospital for autopsy while the investigation was ongoing.
