The family of a four-year-old girl held at gunpoint by a gang of armed robbers who threatened to pull the trigger in front of her grandmother have told of their trauma after the raid.

Rosemary Campbell, 47, was looking after her granddaughter at her Lewisham home when up to five balaclava-clad men stormed in with guns and knives in a broad daylight break-in.

They held one firearm to the toddler's head and a further gun and knife to Ms Campbell's throat before threatening both and making off with just two mobile phones and about £100 cash, the family said.

The raid, in which the home was ransacked while the gang searched the first-floor flat and demanded cash, happened just after 3pm on Monday in St Asaph Road, Brockley.

One tearful family member, who wished not to be named for fear of reprisals, told the Standard: "They broke down the door and came up the stairs and put a knife to her (Rosemary's) throat and a gun to her head.

"They also put a gun to [the four-year-old's] head threatening to kill her.

"We're sick to the stomach. We can't process it. We can't get it through our heads how anybody could do this. We have no idea why they would want to do it.

"They even said they would come back to get them if they called the police. They're completely traumatised."

Ms Campbell has now been moved out of the home and will not return to the address after being left too distraught.

She was treated for shock at hospital with her granddaughter. Both were left unharmed.

The raid took place while the toddler's mother, Lauris, was out fetching food for dinner.

Police have issued an appeal for information for the five men who were described as black, wearing balaclavas, gloves and dark clothing. One suspect was wearing a green camouflage jacket.

Neighbours spoke of a suburban street in "shock" following the incident.

One told how two black men wearing dark hoodies had called at their home just an hour and a half before the incident asking if "Gerald lived here".

"It was odd," the neighbour said, "like they could have been checking who lived here."

Detective Inspector Ian Cameron said: "I'm convinced that someone in the local area has seen or heard something that could assist us with our investigation."
