The residents of Mgababa's Area 7, SA, accused a woman of evil-doing and beat her up while some said she should be burned.
The Mbeko family, who allegedly caught the woman in their yard, said she had come to do evil in their home because she had no clothes on.
Ntombikayise (59) said for a long time she had noticed strange things in her home and knew someone was using bad muthi (herbs) on her family.
"There's a footpath in the middle of our family graves and I couldn't understand who made it and why,'' said Ntombikayise.
"I now know this woman is responsible."
She said it broke her heart that the woman was a relative.
Ntombikayise started hearing funny noises outside the main house at night at about 10pm on Tuesday.
"The noises got louder at dawn. When I checked again I saw a man and a woman outside,'' she said.
"They were walking behind a flock of short zombie-like animals. I screamed and called for my son to come out."
Her son Mjabulelwa said the animals looked half-dog and half-human.
"I fired a shot and went out to see what was happening. I managed to catch the woman but the man and the zombies ran away," said Mjabulelwa.
A dead dog was found at the scene where the woman was caught.
Neighbour Duduzile Cele said: "I heard a sound of children's voices crying outside.
The woman in question said: "Me and my partner were coming from a meeting so we decided to pass through."
The woman was rescued by the Umkomaas police.
Captain Thulani Zwane said no case was opened.
