Mildred Konze, 57, claims she lost R110 000 (US$11 800) in a scam by an estate agent.
The nurse from Motherwell in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, SA told Daily Sun that she used her life savings to buy a four-roomed house.
“I am wise when it comes to money. But this man’s lovely voice made me powerless.
“I agreed to everything he said. My family believes he might have used powerful muthi against me.”
Mildred said she replied to an advert in a newspaper for the house last November.
“Without any paperwork, I deposited the money into his account but shortly afterwards, I discovered someone else was living in the house.
“I asked him when he was going to leave and he told me the house belonged to him and I’d been conned,” she said.
Gerhardus du Preez of GDP Estate Agents told Daily Sun: “I don’t use muthi on my clients, I’m just excellent at my job.
“I know her and I will pay her back R85 000 tomorrow.
“The rest of the money I’ll keep for administration costs. She has laid a charge against me. Other people claim to have bought it too.”
Sizakele Hlatshwayo of the Estate Agency Affairs Board said: “GDP Properties is based in Despatch in the name of Gerhardus du Preez. It appears in our system as an unregistered company.”
Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said: “A case of fraud has been opened against the estate agent. We have not made an arrest yet but are investigating other fraud cases that may be linked to this case.”
