A 56-YEAR-OLD Hwange man will live to rue the day he
decided to
steal four cattle from his area as he has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Alex Mpofu, of H69 Cinderella in Hwange, connived with Shadreck Mugeri (29), of F5 Cinderella who was found not guilty and acquitted, and one Charles Mudenda, who is still at large, to steal four beasts.
Mpofu and Mugeri were
arrested on 26 February after being found slaughtering three of the beasts in the bush while Mudenda fled.
The owner of the cattle was from Chachachunda Village under Chief Hwange.
The duo pleaded not guilty to the offence when they
appeared before Hwange provincial magistrate Mr Peter Tomupei Madiba, saying they had been approached by Mudenda who told them he was selling meat.
Mpofu told the court Mudenda was the one who stole the cattle and asked him to get him some customers for the meat which was in Kabaya area and that he would get his share in return.
Mugeri also told the court he was invited by his
mother and Mudenda and had seen Mudenda axe a cow.
The State invited
witnesses who testified that Mpofu was a menace at the cattle pens in the area and exonerated Mugeri, saying they did not know him. The magistrate then said there were no special circumstances and there was a need for a mandatory sentence.
Mpofu was sentenced to 15 years, but will serve an effective 12 years after three years were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour while Mugeri was discharged.
The State’s case was that on 26 February, Mpofu, Mugeri and Mudenda stole four beasts from the grazing area.
They had slaughtered three of the cattle when policemen arrived at the scene and arrested Mpofu on the spot while Mudenda fled.
Mugeri was arrested at a later date at a beerhall in Cinderella suburb.
Four hooves were recovered from where they had slaughtered the beasts while a calf was also recovered tied to a tree.
The
value of stolen beasts was $1 600 and property worth $800 was recovered.
