The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), has come out guns blazing defending the use of brutality by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on unarmed protestors saying it is their duty.
In a shocking statement ZHRC chairperson Elasto Mugwadi said protesters who unlawfully stood in the way of police officers on duty should be dealt with.
“Even the police have rights too,” he said.
“If someone tries to unlawfully stand in the way of police officers on duty, the law must take its course because we cannot allow banditry in the country.
“We do not condone any form of violence from any source. We acknowledge the demonstrators, in terms of Section 59 of the Constitution, have a right to demonstrate in a peaceful manner and whatever they do should not also infringe on the rights of non-demonstrators. Every right comes with a responsibility.”
The police have been wrapped for attacking unarmed civilians with the utmost brutality, with incidents of children being arrested or beaten up by the anti-riot unit.
